Carberry knock to no avail

Michael Carberry’s unbeaten half-century for Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League proved to be in vain as Eoin Morgan left Sydney Thunder on a winning note.

Morgan made an unbeaten 16 from 12 balls in his final Thunder appearance before leaving to captain England’s one-day side in the Tri Series, as Sydney posted 179 for three.

Jacques Kallis made 70 off 49 balls and Aiden Blizzard contributed 47 from 31 deliveries as Perth’s bowlers struggled to stem the flow of runs.

Carberry top-scored for the Scorchers with a 48-ball 69, which included a pulled six off Pat Cummins, but the Hampshire star received little in the way of support as the hosts stumbled to 159 for five and a 20-run defeat.

South African all-rounder Kallis shone with ball as well as bat as he took 2-24 from his four overs to help reduce Perth to 41 for four, a position from which they never recovered.

Michael Carberry hits out during his 69, but it was fellow left-hander Eoin Morgan who finished on the winning side
