Rain rules at Emirates Old Trafford

Bad weather in Manchester dashed Somerset’s hopes of significantly reducing the gap to LV= County Championship Division One leaders Middlesex.

With the table-toppers taking just nine points from their washed-out draw in Durham earlier in the day, third-placed Somerset would have been hoping to make a dent in their advantage as the Red Rose began the day 95 for three in their follow on, still 122 behind.

However, rain in the morning at Emirates Old Trafford meant an early lunch was taken at 12.30pm but, with no improvement in the conditions, the match was called off as a draw two hours later.

Somerset left Manchester with 12 points, meaning they are still a dozen behind Middlesex, with the hosts taking eight to still leave them second bottom.
